By commissioning custom tailored clothing, you expect to get a garment that is fits you perfectly. However, it can be tricky to determine what exactly the right fit is. Here are some main things to consider if you plan to order a custom made suit.
Suit Jacket
The length of the jacket is very important. Make sure it covers your rear with an extra half an inch. As for the collar, you want it fit around your nape snugly so that it does not appear to float above it. The lapels of your jacket must be flat against your chest when it is buttoned up and should not crease outward.
Check that sleeves are falling straight over your shoulders. You don’t want them sticking out an inch beyond your shoulder line. They should also not pucker up at the top. The ideal length of the sleeves is up to your wrist bone and not where your hand starts. A little of your shirt cuff should be showing out of the sleeves.
Trousers
Check that your trousers fall in a straight line from your waist without any wrinkles or fabric creases over your stomach. There should also be no tugging around the crotch area. If your pants are pleated, make sure the pleats are not pulling apart. As to the length of the pants, its inseam should end just a little on the shoe. You want to make sure there is no extra fabric bunching up around your ankles.
What to Do and Expect
If this is your first time ordering custom tailored clothing, there are some things to keep in mind to ensure a pleasant experience.
First of all, wear your best suit when you go to your tailor for the first fitting. By doing so, your tailor can get a good sense of what style of clothing you’re comfortable with. Also, make sure to wear any items you usually take with you in your pockets such as your wallet or cell phone so that the tailor can accommodate those details in the final finished piece.
During the process of choosing the style, design, color, or fabric of your suit, be on a collaborative mindset. Allow the tailor to give their expert recommendations. Also, expect the first fitting to take at least one hour, so plan accordingly.
Remember that creating custom tailored clothing takes more than one fitting, usually up to three. The whole process normally takes up to 10 weeks at the most to complete.
