5 Quick Tips For Eating Healthy At College
Written by Jaime Fawcett
Seva Man loves the summer because that means he gets to make friends with all of the new and totally awesome college interns in the office. And what did the interns miss most while they were at school…
“Food!” Seva Man says. “Eating healthy at college is surprisingly difficult for our college-goers. Many of them are happy to be home or on their own just so they can eat better.”
And so, this summer, Seva Man is here to help our interns with 5 quick tips on eating healthy at college before they head back to school in a few, unfortunately short, months.
1. Find A Routine
Your schedule will be hectic and will likely vary day to day, but try to find a set time to sit down and have a snack. Your body will get acclimated to the routine and will know when to expect food and when not to. It will help keep your stomach from growling in lecture.
2. Sneak Snacks Into Class
You’ll probably find small prepackaged snacks in your school’s convenience store. Tiny 100 calorie packs are perfect for sneaking into class. To be even more healthy, bring a small container of nuts, a bag of dried fruit, or an apple. Besides, nobody really pays attention to those “No Food or Drink Allowed” signs, right?
3. Manipulate The Meal Plan
Take a good look at the meal plan and dining locations on campus and find out which ones have the healthiest options. Ask for nutrition facts if your school has them. To keep costs down, buy a smaller plan and then supplement meals with healthier homemade meals or side dishes.
4. Invest In A Rice Cooker
Rice is a great bulk food to have on hand. Its healthier than most other grains, so it’s a good source of filling carbohydrates. Plus, you can mix in a variety of lean meats, cooked or raw veggies, and sauces to have a different meal every day. Rice cookers are as cheap as $30, a solid investment that will cook your rice to perfection in minutes.
5. Seek Out Help
Your school’s health or athletic services probably have a nutritionist on campus available to all students. Don’t be afraid to make an appointment. They can help you learn just how many calories and what kinds of nutrients your body needs. They’ll also help give you the best tips for eating on campus or where to buy food off campus with a tight budget.
Indianapolis: What A Metropolis!
Seva Man was paralyzed with indecision, standing in the middle of downtown Indianapolis, conflicted by the plethora of competing and tantalizing aromas tempting his hunger-stricken belly. Its downtown is ranked highest in the nation by Forbes and Liveability.com for its overwhelmingly wonderful number of restaurants, hotels, and shops. It’s been ages since anyone on the Seva team has broken a sweat or an eyeball blood vessel searching for local service providers, so none of us could imagine what it must be like trying to find an available pro in one of the nation’s fastest-growing metropolitan areas without Seva Call. Seva Man almost had founder Gurpreet Singh code a last minute algorithm to help him decide what to have for dinner in this town. Luckily, Eenie-Meenie-Miney-Moe scored him a pretty affordable seat at St. Elmo’s. Of course, when the options are all awesome, you can’t go wrong. What a metropolis this city is!
Having Trouble Finding Service Providers?
Of course, contacting random online business listings or reading every consumer review you stumble upon can go all sorts of wrong. You get your heart set on some stellar company with great reviews only to realize that they are outside of your service area, don’t provide the service, or are completely booked. Average consumers visit 10 websites before finding the right one, and in a burgeoning city like Indianapolis, where newcomers are searching in the dark without many local contacts, the statistics could be even worse.
Fortunately, Seva Call has launched in Indianapolis to put quality connections within reach. Now, just by entering a description of the task needed, their scheduling needs, and contact info at www.talklocal.com, they can get connected to up to 3 local service pros who want to help them on their schedule. Seva Call’s algorithm won’t tell you where to go for dinner, but it does compare companies based on proximity, schedule, services, and even quality assurance measures like online consumer reviews and social media interactions in seconds.
“I love working with vibrant, growing communities like Indianapolis. No matter how much this city grows, it will always feel like a small world where neighbors are just a phone call away with Seva Call” – Founder Aman Bakshi
Seva Man Saves the Day In This Metropolis!
So, if you are in the Indianapolis area and need a service pro, visit www.talklocal.com and get connected to local pros in our network covering over 50 service categories, but only if you want someone to work with you on your schedule.
Remembering American Soldiers This Memorial Day
Written by Dallea Caldwell
They say soldiers never die, they just fade away.
This Memorial Day, many Americans are grasping for the vapors of loved ones who’ve literally gone up in smoke in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other war zones around the world and throughout recent history. A fortunate many hold dear to soldiers still fighting, in hopes that they return safely so that their hair fades to grey, along with the fiery courage that calls them to service, long before the hero him or herself ever does.
They say soldiers never die until they are forgotten.
Memorial Day calls Americans to remember the brave few who lived and died for the land and people they loved. Remembrance breaths life into the spirit of service, courage, and sacrifice to which these brave men and women have devoted themselves.
They say a great many things, those who speak for the dead.
So many poetic speakers for the dead only speak and do not live for the principles for which those soldiers stood. So in closing, we’re letting one soldier speak for himself — through historical letters — in the hopes that it inspires everyone to serve in any way they can.
“I am willing — perfectly willing — to lay down all my joys in this life… But, my dear wife, when I know that with my own joys I lay down nearly all of yours, and replace them in this life with cares and sorrows — when, after having eaten for long years the bitter fruit of orphanage myself, I must offer it as their only sustenance to my dear little children — is it weak or dishonorable, while the banner of my purpose floats calmly and proudly in the breeze, that my unbounded love for you, my darling wife and children, should struggle in fierce, though useless, contest with my love of country?”
– Sullivan Ballou, Civil War, July the 14th, 1861
Remembering American Soldiers
The TalkLocal Team wishes every American family a loving Memorial Day full of remembrance for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and comfort for those families with triangular flags on their mantles.
Happy Memorial Day.
Throw A Memorable Celebration For Memorial Day
Written by Jaime Fawcett
All of us at Talklocal want your coming weekend to be a celebration with family and friends, to help remember all those who have fought and are still fighting over seas. We’ve got a list of decorating ideas, recipes, and tips to help you throw a memorable celebration for Memorial Day.
Flowers of Red, White, and Blue
One of the oldest traditions for Memorial Day is leaving flowers. Contact your local florist to find wonderful arrangements to leave for someone you’d like to remember. Make your own memorial with a loved one’s favorite flower, pictures, and wreaths to keep them present at home. If you’re not quite ready to bust out the Fourth of July decorations, buy smaller arrangements of red tulips, white daisies, and blue lilies to give a patriotic flare for the backyard barbecue.
Cool Foods
Memorial Day is the first holiday to reign in the new warm spring weather. While you’ll probably be heating up over the hot grill cooking burgers and dogs, cool down with some delicious cold foods. Try some of these delicious and refreshing recipes.
